This is my buddy that I take care of on a regular basis. Working with him started off difficult because he is non verbal along with being Autistic. I found it challenging trying to engage in any activities when he first arrived. However, after trying different ways to communicate with him, I found that my buddy prefers using particularly red colored markers whenever he wants to express himself or has a request. I have also found that hand over hand guidance is key to accomplishing most tasks.
The pictures above are a typical start to our mornings. Doing and practicing routine things like you and I do every morning. He makes his bed, puts his pajamas in the laundry basket, takes a shower, brushes his teeth, dresses himself (working on picking out matching outfits and appropriate ones for the weather), gets breakfast and juice out of the refrigerator. Afterwards, we empty out his bookbag and go over any notes sent from school as well as going over anything that he did in school the day before. This has become a routine. He also cleans up his area, cleans up around the cabin, where he resides and then takes the garbage out.
